HOW TO DO COMMUNITY
Let’s be honest: We suck at community. Everybody wants it, and it seems only the lucky find it. If you do find it, the smallest conflict seems to blow it up. You can’t buy it, and you can’t get it delivered. It requires showing up. It’s not convenient. It is risky. Not only are we exhausted from loneliness and disconnection, but our society and democracy is falling apart as a result of our inability to do community.
How to Pray: Sunday Series
Join us in the Music room as we continue our monthly series. We’ll look at teachings on prayer, ancient and modern, explore the difference between piety and devotion, and try out praying together in different ways. Belief is not a requirement - only curiosity. We’ve been developing a supportive, exploratory, nonjudgmental vibe and we’d love to share the experience with you.

MLK Day Service Fair

Whether you want to honor MLK Day with meaningful acts of service, find new ways to engage in your community, or represent an organization doing good work, this event is for you!
Short Attention Span Christmas Eve
Kids can't sit still? Don't want to dress up? Want to come to a Christmas Eve service where you don't have to have it all together?
Combining elements of tradition with inclusive practices, this creative, all-ages service is fit for the shortest attention spans among us. This is the Christmas Eve service for those who want a meaningful experience, not necessarily a fancy one. Movement and sensory experiences will delight participants as we tell the Christmas story in a relevant, inspiring, real-life kind of way.
Don't worry - we'll still light candles and sing Silent Night!
How to Pray: Sunday Series
For one Sunday each month, September-December, FCC is turning one of our services into an experiential workshop on prayer.
Sunday Supper
You're invited to be part of a new gathering at Florence Congregational Church. We think life is better with potlucks! So each month, bring something to share (does NOT have to be fancy!), enjoy getting to know other community-minded folks, and make life a little less isolated for yourself and others. The only way to meet more people is to come out and meet them! We'll even have conversation starters to get you going.

Sufi-Buddhist Fusion Soundbath: Practical Spirituality Series
Violinist and meditation guide Carson Marshall has teamed up with Sufi vocalist Umer Piracha to create a soundbath-workshop that is equally grounded in their respective musical traditions and spiritual lineages, AND invites seekers of all backgrounds to draw from the richness of Buddhist meditation and Sufi Qawwali. (Think Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan meets Paganini.) Together, they lead their unique approach that is part soundbath and part meditation teaching. This is particularly helpful for those who find silent meditation frustrating!
Yearnings: Music that Moves Beyond Borders
Yearnings is a one-of-a-kind concert that brings together incredible singers from Black, Hindu, Jewish, Native American, and Sufi traditions—each sharing music rooted in their heritage and spirit. Backed by an all-star band of local musicians, these sings will explore how songs from such different places can carry the same deep message: we are all connected.
Just like the audience, the evening is an opportunity for local musicians to share and savor their distinct styles of creative expression. With a band that includes Grammy and Urban Music Award winners, educators, radio personalities, human rights advocates, and even scholars of divinity, Yearnings offers an experience that’s as inspiring as it is entertaining.
It is both a celebration of unity and a much-needed antidote to division. How can you miss it?
Prophets Ancient and Modern: Sacred Reading Series
In this four-session mini-course, we will read and discuss excerpts from “modern prophets” alongside biblical prophets. Selections may include writings by James Baldwin, Simone Weil, Howard Thurman, and Ada María Isasi-Díaz, among others.
Sunday Supper
This month's potluck is also a FOOD DRIVE! Florence Congregational is joining the rest of Bombyx this Sunday, November 9, to see if we can stock up the Survival Center's shelves. While we're at it, let's cook for each other! It's hard to support your neighbors if you've never met them. There are conversation starters at each table so you don't have to worry about what to talk about! Let's practice pooling our abundance and re-learning the arts of community so that we are strong enough to face whatever comes our way.

Deep Listening Workshop: Practical Spirituality Series
Deep Listening, the radically inclusive practice developed by Pauline Oliveros, explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious nature of listening. The practice includes bodywork, sonic meditations, and interactive performance, as well as listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness, and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth.
